Hey Doug, I haven't looked at your blog for quite awhile, but came across this today. A loving and heartfelt tribute and comment on Ed's influence on us all. I agree wholeheartedly, he was a good man that is deeply missed. I can't believe it's already been 10 years either, I still expect to see the old fart whenever I go down there. Wish I could.

Talked to Jan Harris this morning and she said she doesn't know about reincarnation, it is up to what one believes in, if you believe in God then he has promised us eternal life. It is how you really think about life in general. She has some pretty good ideas but can't remember them all. this is another view point for you to think about.

What happens when you die? I have no idea. Popular Christian belief says that your soul rises out of your body, you are judged, and either go to Hell to hang with satan and have your genitals eaten over and over again, or go to Heaven and get down with God, Jesus and the angels. For me, that brings to mind a lyric from a David Wilcox tune, "Will there be cigarettes in heaven?"

Buddhists think that you are reincarnated over and over again, gaining experience and wisdom each time, continuing on until you reach a state consciousness that transcends the physical. What happens after that, I don't know but I assure you that I am a long way from that step anyhow. In fact, If they are right, I'm probably just starting out.

Pretty much every religion incorporates some form of judgement, followed by either punishment or reward. My father thinks that this life is the actual Hell. There have been times when I have wondered if he might be right.

What I believe is...

I have no idea. I was raised in a Christian household, and therefore am influenced heavily by that. The problem I have is that the supposed definitive word of God is a book written, rewritten, translated poorly from one language to another, changed, edited and interpreted by people, and people are notorious screwups. Whatever Higher Power that created us also gave us free will, and in doing so made it possible to do all manner of nasty things to one another - including church-sanctioned witch hunts, burnings at the stake, crucifixions, impalings, etc.

I guess I don't care much for organized religion. Historically, it seems to me that it has been more a means of controlling people than anything else. If it's true that God is in everything, then I can worship anywhere, any time. And if that's true, then maybe the Native Americans have it closer to right than anyone else... worship and respect nature.

But I digress. You didn't ask about all of that. What you asked is what I think happens when a person dies. The truth is, I don't know, and I don't subscribe to any particular theory. I'm trying to figure it out for myself. What I do know for sure is that I will die, and whatever happens to me will happen, regardless of what I believe.

Does that make any sense?

I believe that a person when they leave this earth are sent tro purgutory for awhile but most people go on to Heaven with the LORD, he is the one who is judge and jury over everyone. He is the only one who everyone has to answer to . As for being reincarated I don't really believe in that, Heaven is the only place I want to be

Hey buddy... sorry I didn't read this sooner. You know, we always talk about being too busy for this or that, but we really have to find time or before we know it, people just disappear out from under us. I don't know how you feel yet, but I will, and I can imagine that it must hurt something terrible. I'm thinking about you and your girl, and your losses, but also everyone elses' losses. I didn't know Melissa's mom, but I can say that I sure miss Ed too. He was a good man, and I know damn well he's proud of you and watching you now.

My Mom would probably say that there are some people that God just wants to have with him sooner rather than later, and I think that this has to apply to Ed... and likely, Joyce as well. She would also probably say that they're not gone, just on the second leg of a long journey. And they'll be there waiting for you when it's your turn.

Peace, brother - David.
